Survivor takes on The Big Half for RASASC

Supporter Nathalie is taking on the challenge of The Big Half in support of RASASC

A sexual trauma survivor is taking on The Big Half on 4 September in aid of RASASC Guildford.

25-year-old Nathalie is taking on the challenge in order to highlight our work supporting all survivors of rape and sexual abuse over the age of 13 across Surrey.

Nathalie says: “I am supporting RASASC as a survivor of sexual trauma, to help fight for change and elevate the voices of those who have been too afraid to speak.

“The road from surviving to thriving has involved not only accepting the past but also facing it head-on and using my learned experiences for the benefit of others. Even if change turns out to be minimal, at least I can fall asleep easily knowing that I have done everything that I possibly can.

“This is an incredible opportunity to support a cause that is truly close to my heart, while also allowing me to partake in the two things I am most passionate about: advocacy and running!”

Nathalie, who works as an elected student officer trustee at Imperial College Union, has already completed the Ashbourne half Marathon as part of her training, and is aiming for a sub-two-hour time for The Big Half.

She says: “I completed the Ashbourne Half Marathon in July in just over two hours. It was incredibly hilly, with a 200+ m elevation gain that happened twice! Even though my quads were left feeling sore for several days afterwards, it was a challenging and fun race that helped my preparation for the Big Half.

“Thank you to RASASC for taking me on board, I will do everything I can between now and the day of the race to raise both funds and awareness.”

Nathalie has also held a bake sale at Imperial College Union in aid of RASASC to boost her fundraising, raising an incredible £429.96 in one day!

We’re pleased with the news that children who have experienced child sexual abuse and exploitation are now to be considered in the new Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) strategy, as announced by MP Jess Phillips. The new VAWG strategy was due to be published in the summer, but has now been pushed back towards the end of 2025. We will have to wait until the final strategy is released to see the impact it will have for those concerned. RASASC was part of a large contingent of signatories on an open letter to the Home Secretary, requesting that victims of child sexual abuse and exploitation be included within the VAWG strategy. We are delighted that this action has had a positive impact. Following several delays and a degree of mystery surrounding what will be in the final version, we sincerely hope that the completed VAWG strategy has heeded the advice and recommendations from experts, to deliver an effective and fully resourced plan of action.
