Rock Choir help mark RASASC’s 30th birthday in style

Rock Choir Guildford, Godalming and Farnham help us celebrate our 30th birthday in style!

The wonderful members of Guildford, Godalming and Farnham Rock Choir gave up their time in March to help us celebrate our 30th birthday in style.

On Saturday, 19 March, around 200 members of the choir came along to support RASASC with three special performances in Guildford to help raise awareness of who we are and the support we provide for survivors of rape and sexual abuse.

Starting off with a morning performance in Tunsgate Quarter, the choir then held a surprise lunchtime flash mob and performance in Guildford High Street, before finishing the day with a performance in The Friary Shopping Centre. Altogether, the three performances raised an incredible £988.63 towards our vital work.

Lesley Devonport, RASASC’s Chief Executive Officer said: “Since we began in 1992, progress has been made in how survivors are treated and believed, and in availability and access to essential support services. However, there is still lots to do. Recent, high-profile cases have kept the issue in the forefront of the news agenda, which has encouraged survivors to come forward and seek help – something we would always urge them to do.

“But we can’t do it alone, and we are delighted that Rock Choir came out in support of RASASC to help highlight the work we do. The incredible amount raised will make a huge difference to survivors of rape and sexual abuse across Surrey, thank you.”

You can view some pictures and videos from the day on the Guildford, Godalming and Farnham Rock Choir Facebook page.

RASASC support survivors of all genders over the age of 13 across Surrey who have been raped, sexually abused or had an unwanted sexual experience. For more information and to get in touch, visit our website, where you can also make a donation towards our vital work.

We’re pleased with the news that children who have experienced child sexual abuse and exploitation are now to be considered in the new Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) strategy, as announced by MP Jess Phillips. The new VAWG strategy was due to be published in the summer, but has now been pushed back towards the end of 2025. We will have to wait until the final strategy is released to see the impact it will have for those concerned. RASASC was part of a large contingent of signatories on an open letter to the Home Secretary, requesting that victims of child sexual abuse and exploitation be included within the VAWG strategy. We are delighted that this action has had a positive impact. Following several delays and a degree of mystery surrounding what will be in the final version, we sincerely hope that the completed VAWG strategy has heeded the advice and recommendations from experts, to deliver an effective and fully resourced plan of action.
