New specialist courts for sexual offences
We’re pleased to hear the Government has announced plans to improve court backlogs for cases of serious sexual offences.
There are currently almost 20,000 serious sexual offence cases waiting to be heard in the Crown Court in England and Wales.
Under new plans:
- Crown Courts will have at least one courtroom set up to hear cases involving serious sexual offences.
- Fixed dates will be given for trials involving serious sexual offences.
RASASC CEO Daisy Anderson said:
"It's encouraging to hear the Government is taking steps to deal with the current backlog of sexual offence cases in our courts.
"It is known that alongside the low prosecution rates for sexual offences, the extensive delays to court proceedings are a major factor in dissuading victims from coming forward. We hope these measures will alleviate some of the delays and improve opportunities for justice."
