Donna takes on Ben Nevis for RASASC

RASASC supporter Donna is climbing Ben Nevis on Saturday, 10 September in support of RASASC.

Donna on a previous climb

We had a quick chat with Donna, who is about to start a degree apprenticeship in physiotherapy, to learn more about what has led her to undertake this incredible challenge!

Have you ever done anything like this before?

“In 2006 I went on a trip of a lifetime to Ecuador, where we climbed a number of volcanoes, the most notable being Cayambe and Cotopaxi, which sparked my love of the mountains and the freedom it gives. This will be the second of the three UK peaks I have done, as I climbed Snowden in 2018, so there’s just Scafell Pike to go!”

What have you been doing to train for your challenge?

“I was recently in Ireland for a friend’s wedding, so I took the opportunity to climb Croagh Patrick in County Mayo in training for this challenge. Otherwise, I have been doing yoga, trying to take long walks when I can and practicing my mountain climbers at home!"

What are your hopes for the day, do you have a set time you wish to complete the climb in?

“All I’m hoping for is good weather to be able to enjoy the views! I'll be taking my time and taking it all in and stopping for plenty of snacks. And then I’m planning to have a nice dip in the Loch and hot tub at our accommodation afterwards!"

Why have you decided to support RASASC?

“RASASC has been a great support for me, all the help from my ISVA was invaluable. I really don't know what I would have done without this, and without having the peer support from the groups provided. Thank you for all your support, and I hope this can be used to help others build the confidence to seek help.”

You can support Donna on her incredible challenge by visiting her fundraising page and making a donation.

All money raised from Donna’s challenge will be used to support survivors of rape and sexual abuse over the age of 13 across Surrey through our helpline, counselling and Independent Sexual Violence Advisor (ISVA) services.

Good luck Donna, and thank you for your support!

We’re pleased with the news that children who have experienced child sexual abuse and exploitation are now to be considered in the new Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) strategy, as announced by MP Jess Phillips. The new VAWG strategy was due to be published in the summer, but has now been pushed back towards the end of 2025. We will have to wait until the final strategy is released to see the impact it will have for those concerned. RASASC was part of a large contingent of signatories on an open letter to the Home Secretary, requesting that victims of child sexual abuse and exploitation be included within the VAWG strategy. We are delighted that this action has had a positive impact. Following several delays and a degree of mystery surrounding what will be in the final version, we sincerely hope that the completed VAWG strategy has heeded the advice and recommendations from experts, to deliver an effective and fully resourced plan of action.
