Brother and sister team take on The Big Half for RASASC

A brother and sister team are taking on The Big Half on 4 September in aid of RASASC Guildford.

Adam and Eleanor Abrahams

Adam and Eleanor Abrahams, both experienced runners, are taking on the challenge to raise awareness of the services provided by RASASC for survivors of rape and sexual abuse across Surrey.

RASASC Guildford support anyone over the age of 13 across Surrey who has been affected by rape, sexual abuse or an unwanted sexual experience.

Adam has previously run several marathons and three half marathons, so taking on The Big Half for RASASC should be a breeze!

47-year-old Adam from Cranleigh said: “I wanted to give a charity that's local to me some recognition and support. Personally, I think it is wonderful that there is an organisation like RASASC that people can go to anonymously for help and support after experiencing intense trauma.

“Running is great where I live. I can jog without seeing a car or crossing a road for 14 miles along the old Horsham to Guildford rail track. I'm not really worried about speed for this race, I just want to enjoy it and have fun.”

Adam’s sister Eleanor is also a seasoned runner, having completed two half marathons, the Brighton Marathon, and twice taking part in Endure 24.

Teacher Eleanor is looking forward to running alongside her brother again, like they used to when they ran together at Haslemere Border Athletics Club.

She says “My sister-in-law got me involved with RASASC Guildford, as she works for the charity, and It’s a cause hugely worth supporting. I am nearly 50, so I’m making the most of every sporting activity my body allows me to do - in my head I am still 35!

“I am aiming to complete the Big Half in two and a half hours as I think it will be hot, and Adam and I will be chatting!

“I have done quite a few events around London, and I always enjoy having the run of the roads and seeing parts of London in a different light. Knowing people are sponsoring me is always a motivator, the event itself is the easy part!”

We’re pleased with the news that children who have experienced child sexual abuse and exploitation are now to be considered in the new Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) strategy, as announced by MP Jess Phillips. The new VAWG strategy was due to be published in the summer, but has now been pushed back towards the end of 2025. We will have to wait until the final strategy is released to see the impact it will have for those concerned. RASASC was part of a large contingent of signatories on an open letter to the Home Secretary, requesting that victims of child sexual abuse and exploitation be included within the VAWG strategy. We are delighted that this action has had a positive impact. Following several delays and a degree of mystery surrounding what will be in the final version, we sincerely hope that the completed VAWG strategy has heeded the advice and recommendations from experts, to deliver an effective and fully resourced plan of action.
